Six years ago after beginning basic training with Maximus, our Bullmastiff puppy, we became frustrated - not because he was giving us a run for our money, which he was, quite literally, but because his nasty leash was brutally cutting into our hands every time he pulled. ‘Feeling the burn’ was not a goal in this work out!

We desperately scoured pet supply stores and boutiques for relief but found pretty much everything else under the sun. Specifically, what we needed was a lead suitable for a strong dog that had not yet come to terms with the concept of being walked. We wanted comfort, reliability… and a ‘form follows function’ aesthetic seemed appropriate.

What we found were the ubiquitous retractable leads, not an option; the ‘dime a dozen,’ nylon webbing products ranging from a dime a dozen to $50 a set; super-preppy, ribbon designs with polka dots, sailboats, and toile; over the top, “frou frou” numbers with glitter, organza and the like; and finally, earth-friendly hemp products, which, although very smart and cool, did not knock our socks off with comfort.

In leather, the options were feminine ensembles with decorative appliqués; serious, beautifully handcrafted pieces made in Italy, attached to $450 price tags; western wear; hardcore, motorcycle wear; or rolled leather, which was different, but certainly not going to save our hands during a session with Maximus.

When shopping for a comfy and sensible liner for our new puppy’s crate, we found big bolster beds in beautiful fabrics and prints everywhere. But something of outstanding quality conducive to crate use did not seem to exist at all! Our criteria: Easy to care for, comfortable in all seasons, supportive, yet not bulky, moisture-wicking, durable, non-toxic, non-irritant, non-flammable and harmonious with any home décor. Impossible?

Well… we did it ourselves! We sourced the materials and created our own luxurious, smart solutions for everyday, doggie lifestyles. Purple Pebble LLC was born in January, 2002 and now offers a complete line of premium, practical, and thoughtfully-designed products.
